Jaguar’s HC Urban Meyer has to thank a former software engineer for his first NFL win

The Jacksonville Jaguars won their first win with Urban Meyer as head coach in a last-second field goal against the Miami Dolphins in London. It was a wild finish for the international fans that filled the stadium again, and Trevor Lawrence finally showed why he was the best pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Jaguars victory wasn’t nice, but it doesn’t matter. As the cliché goes, a win is a win. It was ugly, and Meyer later even compared it to a root canal. While Lawrence and running back James Robinson played well, the Jaguars head coach has to send a giant thank you card to a former software engineer who credited him with his first win as NFL head coach.

Matthew Wright goes from software developer to Jaguar hero

Matthew Wright. Never heard of the name?

It’s okay, most didn’t have it until the London surprise on Sunday. The Jaguars recently took Wright off the training team and he hit the clutch not just once but twice.

After the game, Lawrence mentioned that Wright was a software engineer a month ago. Now he’s the hero of the Jaguars organization and certainly a giant apple in the eyes of Meyer and Lawrence, who sniffed their first five attempts in the 2021 season and were on the verge of an unfortunate story.

All of this can be put to rest as the Jags avoided losing their 21st straight game, just a few games short of the NFL record.

The silent kicker got the ball

After the win, Wright got the cue ball, because why not? First he shot an absurd, remarkable 54-yard field goal that looked good, looked bad, and finally hit at the last second, just like a car that changes lane at the last moment.

Minutes later, Wright appeared and nailed the game winner to a wild riot on the sidelines and fans of the Jaguars in a crowded stadium in London. After the game, Meyer Wright’s reaction to receiving the ball (h / t Mia O’Brien).

“That was maybe most of what we have ever heard him talk.”

The 25-year-old played his college ball at UCF and is now the Jaguars’ kicker. While Josh Lambo’s time with the Jags is in the air, Wright has done nothing but make a legitimate case for the job.

Wright is now 3-4 on the year and 6-7 on PATs. Lambo left PATs 5-7 but hasn’t made a field goal for the year and maybe Meyer and the Jags will stay with Wright.

The two went back and forth in the office all week, and the best decision Meyer made in Jacksonville was to choose the former software engineer over the seasoned incumbent.

It took until mid-October, but the Jaguars finally got their first win in 2021. Meyer won his first in the NFL, Lawrence won his and the franchise overall won its first game since September 2020. It looked better on Sunday, despite the fact that they faced the Dolphins.

Jacksonville will head into bye week before coming up against a brutal stretch from the Seattle Seahawks, Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts, with two of those three on the road.

Maybe the team – and Meyer – needed that after a brutal start to the year to save his job, at least for the time being.

All of this is due to a man who did software engineering no more than a month ago. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up.
